Making the following\nsimple \u201crenovations\u201d can transform your resume and increase your chances of standing\nout in the crowd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1.     <\/strong> Ask yourself: \u201cDoes this need to be in here?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

One page doesn\u2019t provide a\nlot of space to describe your career history and accomplishments.  Review\nyour current resume and edit unnecessary items.  Experts advise to skip an\n\u201cobjective statement\u201d and instead prioritize your skills summary and\nprofessional experience above other elements. Then include education,\ncertifications, and associations toward the end of the page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2.     <\/strong> Use dynamic keywords.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDressing up\u201d your resume\nwith fancy (yet unnecessary) words is not a great idea, but including a few powerful\nkeywords throughout it is critical.  Review how you\u2019ve describe your past experience\nand consider replacing plain words with more compelling, persuasive ones. \nFor example, \u201cforecasted\u201d and \u201cconceptualized\u201d can provide more insight into\nthe successes of your past positions than \u201cpredicted\u201d or \u201ccreated.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3.     <\/strong> Clean up the layout.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Take a look at a printed\ncopy of your resume.  Is it easy to read? Are the margins wide enough to\nlet the text \u201cbreathe\u201d and not look cluttered?  Is the font consistent\nthroughout the document?  Be sure to fix any inconsistencies and arrange the\nelements to be visually appealing. The last thing you want is for a hiring\nmanager to decide your resume is too hard to read, then discard it into the\n\u201creject\u201d pile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4.     <\/strong> Translate job responsibilities into results.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A resume should not just\nsummarize your past \u201ctasks.\u201d Instead, it\u2019s supposed to describe your achievements\nand the value<\/em> you brought to the\norganizations you worked for.  Your resume should answer the questions:\n\u201cWhy should I hire you?\u201d and \u201cWhat can you bring to the table?\u201d You must\nclearly identify the results you produced.  For example, did you save the company\nmoney, make tasks more efficient, or help the company achieve a major goal?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5.     <\/strong> Proofread\u2026 and then proofread again.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Typos can destroy the credibility\nof an otherwise excellent resume.  Put your resume aside, wait a few\nhours, print it out, and read it.
